Etymology: Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, is named after a church rather than a person or a place. Its full name in Medieval Greek was "Naós Hagías Sophías," the Church of Holy Wisdom, a prominent 6th-century Byzantine church. Over time the church's name was applied to the surrounding settlement, and the city came to be called Sofia, first attested as its name in the 14th century. The name was later reinforced under Ottoman rule, when the Ottoman Turkish form "Sofya" was used. The Bulgarian form "Sófija" then became the standard, and the city's name was romanized as Sofia. The Greek root behind it, "sophía," meant "wisdom," especially divine wisdom, the same idea behind the name Sophia.

Synonyms: wisdom

Antonyms: folly, ignorance
