Etymology: The past forms of "sodomize" are built on a place name, and the story behind that place is the real etymology here. Sodom appears in the Hebrew Bible as a city destroyed for its wickedness, and its name became a byword for a particular kind of sin. The verb itself is a plain English formation: "sodom" plus the suffix "-ize", which entered English through Middle French and Late Latin from Ancient Greek "-izein", a suffix used to turn nouns into verbs meaning "to make into" or "to treat in the manner of" something. So "sodomize" means, at its root, to treat someone in the manner of Sodom. The "-ed" ending is simply the regular past tense and past participle, so "sodomized" describes the action of the verb or, as an adjective, something that has undergone it. The verb is itself the more useful thing to know about, since the suffix is what tells you how it was made: a name becomes a verb, and that verb carries the name's reputation with it.
