Etymology: This is the simple past and past participle of "sodomise," a verb built from "sodomy" and the suffix "-ise." The suffix reached English through Middle French "-iser," from Late Latin "-izare," and ultimately from Greek "-izein," which is also the source of many other English verbs ending in "-ise." "Sodomy" takes its name from Sodom, the city in the Hebrew Bible whose destruction is recounted in Genesis 19.
