Snozz
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- Slang for the nose, the facial organ used for smelling and breathing
- A casual, humorous term for the nose on a person's face
- An informal word meaning the nose, often used in a playful or colloquial way
Etymology: "Snozz" is American slang for the nose, and it is a playful alteration of "schnozzle," which entered American English in the 1930s. "Schnozzle" itself is an elaboration of the earlier slang "schnozz," with the same meaning, and it borrows the German-derived "Schnauze," meaning snout or muzzle, which in German also covers the mouth and face of an animal. The term is most closely tied to the comedian Jimmy Durante, whose large nose became his trademark. He was nicknamed "Schnozzola" (sometimes "Schnozzle"), and his fame carried the word into everyday American speech as a cheerfully affectionate way to refer to a big nose. "Snozz" is a shortened form of that same family of words.
