Snor
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- To breathe loudly and roughly through the nose and throat while sleeping, producing a harsh rasping sound
- Describing the act of making a noisy, rough breathing sound during sleep, usually caused by air passing through relaxed tissues
- Making a hoarse, rumbling noise with each breath while lying asleep, an old dialect term for snoring
Etymology: "Snor" is an old variant of "snore," surviving in Scots and northern English dialect, where it means to breathe noisily through the nose while asleep. The verb "snore" entered English in the late Middle Ages as "snoren," and "snor" belongs to the same family of forms. Its exact pre-medieval ancestry is uncertain, but the group is almost certainly imitative, built from the nasal rasp of breathing, and it has close relatives across Germanic languages, such as German "schnarchen" and Dutch "snurken," which also mean to snore.
