Etymology: "Slopped" is the simple past of "slop," and the verb is an extension of the noun for a loose outer garment. Old English had a word "slop" for a long, loose gown or outer garment, and Middle English later used "slop" for a loose baggy trouser or a wide-legged garment. Liquid spilling came from the sense of something loose and sloppy, not from the garment itself, and the verb meaning to spill carelessly appears in later English as a natural outgrowth of that looseness. The noun has a parallel in Icelandic, where "sloppur" likewise named a long, loose gown, which suggests the word belongs to an old Germanic family. Its ultimate source is less certain: it is probably connected to "slip," since "slip" and "slop" share a sense of something that slides or hangs loosely.
