Etymology: "Skywriters" is the plural of "skywriter", a compound of "sky" and "writer". The first element is the familiar Old Norse-derived word for the heavens, and the second is the agent noun from "write", so a skywriter is simply one who writes in the sky. The plural simply applies that agent to a group of people, whether pilots trailing smoke across a summer afternoon or the crews who do so for advertising and celebrations.
