Etymology: "Skipped" is simply the past tense and past participle of "skip", so its story is the story of the verb. "Skip" came into Middle English from North Germanic sources, ultimately from a Proto-Germanic root meaning to push or move repeatedly, and it is related to the English word "shove". The sense of leaping lightly from place to place grew out of that idea of quick, repeated movement, and from there it extended to dropping or omitting something, which is the sense behind "missed out on".
