Etymology: Skibidi began as a scat-singing vocable, a nonsense syllable sung for its rhythm rather than its meaning. Its wide fame, though, traces to a 2018 dance song, "Skibidi," by the Russian band Little Big, which popularised the sound well before most people had heard of the later internet phenomenon. The word's biggest surge came from the YouTube web series Skibidi Toilet, which started in 2023 and still runs. The series took the syllable from "Dom Dom Yes Yes," a 2022 song in Romani by the Bulgarian singer Biser King. Young children watching the show adopted the word first, using it playfully, and it was later taken up online as an example of "brain rot," the label for the flood of absurd, low-effort internet humour. Used as an adjective, the word is a jocular term for something silly, nonsensical or chaotic. It sits alongside the later "gegagedigedagedago," which follows the same pattern of invented nonsense syllables.
