Etymology: "Similarize" is a plain English formation: the adjective "similar" with the suffix "-ize," which turns an adjective into a verb meaning to make something of a certain kind or to cause it to resemble something else. The suffix itself comes from Greek "-izein," through Latin "-izare," and it was used widely in English to create verbs such as "modernize" and "organize." The word is built the same way as its neighbors. "Similar" came into English from French, ultimately from Latin "similis," meaning "like" or "of the same kind," so "similarize" carries that root of resemblance into a verb. Its meaning is correspondingly direct: to make alike, or to bring into likeness.
