Etymology: "Showgrounds" is the plural of "showground," a compound of "show" and "ground." The first element comes from the Old English "sceawian," meaning to look at or view, which gave rise to the modern sense of putting something on display for others to see. The second is the ordinary word "ground," in the sense of an open area of land set aside for a particular purpose, as with playing grounds or parade grounds. Put together, a showground is literally a piece of land used for displays, where agricultural and livestock exhibitions, trade fairs and entertainments take place. The plural form describes a site that holds such events in a single enclosed area, often with pavilions, pens and arenas spread across it.
