Etymology: "Shopwalkers" is the plural of "shopwalker," a compound of "shop" and "walker." The pairing is literal: a shopwalker was a salaried employee who walked the floor of a store, supervising sales staff and attending to customers. The word is a transparent English formation from the two plain elements, so there is no foreign root or coinage story behind it. The job it names was once a fixture of large department stores, where a shopwalker moved between counters to keep order, settle disputes and direct shoppers to the right goods.
