Shopkeep

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A person who owns or operates a retail store and manages its daily business affairs
  2. Someone who runs a shop or small store, handling sales, inventory, and customer service
  3. A merchant or retailer who owns and conducts business in a commercial shop or store

Etymology: A shopkeeper is someone who keeps a shop, and "shopkeep" is that compound with its last syllable clipped away. "Keeper" comes from "keep," which in Old English meant to watch over, guard, or look after something, so a keeper was originally a guardian of whatever was in their charge. The surprising part is "shop." In Old English, "sceoppa" meant a booth or lean-to, a simple roofed structure, not a place for selling goods. Workshops and stalls shared that sense, and the retail meaning grew from craftspeople who sold their wares from the front of the places where they made them. Only later did the shop become the place where goods were sold rather than made.
