That suggests the term was a common, unembarrassed name for the privy in northern Europe rather than a English invention. English took the pattern and kept it literal. A shithouse was simply a small building housing a privy, usually set apart from the dwelling, and the name tells you exactly what it was for. Over time the word also became a general insult for something squalid or badly made, though the core sense has always stayed with the outbuilding itself.
