- An English town in the county of West Yorkshire, positioned in the valley of the River Aire between Bradford and Leeds
Etymology: Shipley is a place name rather than a common word, and its meaning is transparent once the parts are separated. It combines Old English "scēap" ("sheep") with "lēah", a word for a meadow, field or pasture. The result describes a clearing where sheep were grazed. The second element, "lēah", is the same one that survives in many English place names, such as Bradley, Ashley and Woodley, where it usually marks a cleared patch of ground within woodland or open country. Modern English "-ley" endings descend from it, so a name like Shipley is essentially "sheep" plus "-ley" as English speakers would still recognise the pattern. A similar name, Gateley, meaning "goat lea", shows the same construction applied to a different animal, suggesting that naming land after the livestock kept on it was a common practice.
