  3. Masculine personal name of Irish origin, a variant of John meaning God is gracious

Etymology: Shane is the Anglicized form of the Northern Irish pronunciation of Irish "Seán," which is itself the Irish form of a name that has travelled a long way. The chain runs from Hebrew "Yōḥānān," meaning "God is gracious," through Koine Greek "Iōánnēs" and Latin "Johannes," then into Old French as "Jehan," and finally into Irish, where it became "Seán." The name's family is large. Shane sits in a group of doublets, forms that split off from the same ancestor and ended up as different names in different languages. Among male names these include John, Jack, Johann, Jean, Juan, João, Ivan, Evan, Sean, Shaun, and Giovanni. Several of the female forms also share this root, including Jane, Joan, Johanna, Siobhan, and Sheena, so the same ancestral name ended up naming people across much of Europe under many guises.
