Definitions
- A genus of fish commonly known as rockfish, which are characterized by their spiny fins and deep bodies found in both Pacific and Atlantic Oceans
- A group of marine species that inhabit rocky substrates in various oceanic environments, known for their vibrant colors and commercial value
- An assemblage of diverse fish known for their ecological importance, often sought after for sport and food due to their flavor and texture
Etymology: Greek "sebastos" meant "venerable" or "revered." It was the standard Greek rendering of the Latin title "Augustus," which the Roman emperor Augustus received, so the word carried imperial dignity long before it named any fish. Georges Cuvier and Achille Valenciennes used it for the genus in their multi-volume "Histoire naturelle des poissons," published from 1828 onward, with Cuvier's naming of the genus dated to 1829. Naturalists of that period often drew on classical Greek and Latin for scientific names, so the choice fit a common pattern.
