Etymology: "Schedulings" is simply the plural of "scheduling," the gerund-style noun formed from the verb "schedule." The plural form lets speakers refer to several distinct arrangements of times or tasks at once, as in comparing two schedulings for the same project. The root word, "schedule," comes from Latin "schedula," a small strip of paper or a slip of writing, diminutive of "scheda," a sheet of papyrus. That physical sense of a paper slip carries through to the modern meaning: a timetable is, at heart, a written list. The verb "to schedule" grew out of the noun, and "scheduling" followed as the name for the act of drawing up such a list.
