Schape

Part of speech: noun, verb

Definitions

  1. The outward form or outline of an object or figure ; to fashion or mold something into a particular configuration
  2. The external contour or configuration of a thing ; to create or mold material into a desired form
  3. An archaic spelling for the outline something presents to the eye ; to give a material its intended configuration by working it

Etymology: Before "shape" meant an outline, it meant something made. Its Old English ancestor, "gesceap", could denote a created being, a creature, or the form that fate gave a life. The related verb, "sceppan", meant to create or ordain, so shaping something originally meant bringing it into being. The "sch" spelling in this variant is an older way of writing the same sound, "sh", which Old English had spelled with "sc". Writers used "schape" for centuries beside "shape" before the modern spelling became standard.
