  2. An expansive and ornate structure used as a royal or official house, commonly found in Ottoman and Persian cultures; comprising residential, ceremonial, and administrative areas; typically symbolizes authority and luxury

Etymology: Persian "sarây" meant "courtyard, dwelling, palace," and that is the root of the English "saray," a grand royal residence. The same spelling also names a figure in the Hebrew Bible: Sarai, the original name of Abraham's wife, later changed to Sarah. Her name comes from the Hebrew plural of "sar," meaning "master" or "chief," so the name carries a sense of rank. The Persian word passed into Turkish, where it became the usual term for a sultan's residence, as in the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul, which Turks still call Topkapı Sarayı.

Synonyms: palace, mansion, court
