Etymology: Sanguisorba is the botanical name for the burnets, a genus of flowering plants in the rose family. The name is a Latin coinage built from "sanguis," meaning blood, and "sorbere," to soak up or sip. Carl Linnaeus, who formalised plant naming in the eighteenth century, adopted the name for the genus, and it has been used in botany since. The "blood" in the name refers to the reddish colour of the flowers in some species, and the "soaking up" refers to the old belief that the plant could stop bleeding. Herbalists valued the roots and leaves as astringents, a use that gave the plant its place in medieval medicine. The modern English name "burnet" comes from a different source, from the Old French "brunet," meaning brownish, which describes the colour of the flower heads in some species.
