Sandboarder
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A person who slides down steep sand dunes while standing on a short, board-like device, much as a surfer rides a wave
- Someone who glides across the face of a sand dune on a small board, often for recreation or sport
- An enthusiast who practises the sport of riding down sandy slopes on a board designed for that purpose
Etymology: "Sandboarder" is a plain compound: a person who rides a sandboard, with the agent suffix "-er" added to "sandboard." The suffix does the work here. "-er" turns an activity or object into the person who performs it, so a sandboarder is simply someone who goes sandboarding, just as a surfer rides waves and a skateboarder rides a skateboard. The base word "sandboard" combines "sand" with "board," the flat, board-like device a rider stands on. Sandboarding itself is the practice of sliding or riding down sand dunes on such a board, a sport that took its name from the older word for the equipment. Because the two parts are transparent, the term needs little explanation beyond the sport it describes.
