Sandalled

Part of speech: verb, adjective

Definitions

  1. Having the feet shod in open footwear held on by straps or thongs rather than covered by a full shoe
  2. Describing a person who has put on light open footwear with straps across the foot
  3. Wearing light, open-toed footwear that leaves much of the foot exposed to the air

Etymology: "Sandalled" is simply "sandal" with the past-tense and adjectival ending "-ed" added, so it describes someone who is wearing sandals, or a foot or shoe fitted with them. The base word has come into English through Latin and Greek, where a related term named a light open shoe, and English adopted "sandal" for the same kind of footwear. The spelling with two l's is the British convention, which doubles a final consonant before adding "-ed" after a short stressed vowel, as in "travelled" and "marshalled." American English usually writes "sandaled" with one l. Both forms describe the same thing, and neither carries any extra meaning beyond the footwear itself.
