Etymology: Italian "saltimbanco" is a compound formed from the verb "saltare", to jump, and "banco", a bench or platform, so the literal sense is something like "one who jumps onto a bench". That image fits the street performers of early modern Italy, who leapt and tumbled on raised stands to draw a crowd before passing a hat or selling their wares. English borrowed the word from Italian, and it carried the performers' reputation along with it. Street entertainers were widely viewed by settled English-speaking communities as people not to be trusted, so the term tended to hang a note of suspicion over its user. That is why, although "saltimbanco" describes a skilled acrobat-showman, English speakers more often reached for "mountebank", a word from the same kind of street-stage background, which came to mean a charlatan selling dubious remedies.
