Etymology: "Saltify" is a transparent formation from "salt" and the suffix "-ify," so the history lies mostly in that ending. English took "-ify" through Old French "-fier" from Latin "-ficare," which comes from "facere," meaning "to make" or "to do." "Saltify" therefore means "to make into salt," and "saltified" describes something that has undergone that change. The same pattern appears in "petrify," from Latin "petra," meaning "stone," plus "facere," so "petrify" means "to make into stone." Many English verbs ending in "-ify" were built on this model, attaching a noun to the making-suffix. The adjective "saltified" is the past-participle form, describing the result.
