Etymology: The saiga is a stocky, long-nosed antelope of the Eurasian steppes, and its English name comes to us through Russian. The Russian word "сайга" (sajgá) was borrowed from Kazakh "сайғақ" (sayğaq), which in turn descends from a reconstructed Proto-Turkic form, "*saygak". The name thus travelled through the languages of the Central Asian steppe, where the animal has roamed for millennia, before reaching European speakers via Russia. The word's path is a reminder that Russian was the gateway for many Central Asian names. Russian naturalists and traders, working across lands where Turkic languages were spoken, adopted local terms for animals and goods, and English took the Russian form from there.
