Etymology: "Runningly" is the simple result of attaching the suffix "-ly" to "running," the present participle of "run." The suffix comes from Old English "-lic," meaning "having the form or quality of," which over time turned adjectives into adverbs describing manner. Middle English speakers therefore formed "renningli" and similar spellings from the verb's participle, meaning "in a running manner." The sense "without any pause" grows naturally from that manner. To do something in a running way is to keep moving steadily, so the word came to describe continuous action with no interruption. Because the word is built transparently from familiar parts, its meaning has changed little since it entered the language.
