Etymology: "Rosaries" is the plural of "rosary," and the original sense was not a string of beads at all but a garland of roses. The bead sense developed later, when a string of prayers was counted off on something like a wreath of flowers, so the object was named for the wreath it resembled. The same Latin root gave English a surprising doublet. The word "rosary" sits alongside "Rosario," the name of a Spanish-language form tied to Our Lady of the Rosary, and both trace back to "rosarium." Coins offer an unrelated but parallel echo: the term "rosary" in numismatics refers to the laurel wreath shown on the head of an emperor's bust.
