Etymology: A rosarian is, at its most literal, someone who tends a rose garden. The word builds on "rosary," which in English first meant a rose garden before it came to name a string of prayer beads, a sense that arose from the medieval practice of reciting prayers as a garland of roses. The suffix "-an" marks a person connected with the noun it follows, so a rosarian is simply a person connected with the rosary, or rose garden. The garden sense is the older and more concrete one, and the person who worked in it took the name from the place. Today the term is most often used for amateur and professional growers who breed, catalogue and care for roses, sometimes belonging to societies devoted to the flower.
