Etymology: "Ropeways" is the plural of "ropeway," a compound formed from "rope" and "way." The pairing is about as literal as English compounds get: a path made of rope. Ropes have been strung across gorges, rivers and mountainsides for transport since ancient times, and the modern cable-driven systems that carry skiers up slopes or tourists over canyons are the descendants of those simple cable crossings. The plural simply pluralises the final element, so it refers to several such systems or to a network of them. Each part of the compound keeps its ordinary sense, with "way" meaning a route or passage and "rope" meaning the tensioned cable that supports and pulls the vehicles along it.

Synonyms: cable car, aerial tramway, gondola lift, chairlift, skyway
