Etymology: "Rolfs" is the third-person singular present form of "rolf", a verb meaning to perform Rolfing, the bodywork technique named after Ida Pauline Rolf (1896–1979), an American biochemist who developed it. Rolfing is a form of deep manipulation of the connective tissue, or fascia, and Rolf's name became a verb through the practice itself, so a practitioner who works on a client's body "rolfs" them. The verb's deeper origin is uncertain. It may derive from a use of the male name Ralph, or it may be imitative in origin, but no firm link has been established. The surname-to-verb path is the clearer one: a method named for a person was turned into an action word, the way other eponyms have been.
