Etymology: Rodomonte was a boastful, fearsome pagan king in the Italian Renaissance epics Orlando innamorato and its sequel Orlando furioso, and his bragging gave English and French a word for loud, showy boasting. The Italian poets built him as a figure of swaggering excess, and his name became shorthand for the kind of talk that outran any deed. The French borrowed the name as "rodomontade," and English took the word from French. Its form has been shaped by that route, so the verb here is simply the past tense of "rodomontade," the noun for such bombast. A close relative, "rodomontado," entered English along a parallel path and survives as a doublet of the same source.
