Etymology: Before it meant a long garment, the noun "robe" meant plunder. It descends from a Germanic word, reconstructed as Frankish "rauba", meaning booty or spoils. In Old French it came to mean clothing taken from defeated enemies, and then clothing in general. English borrowed the noun from Old French in the Middle Ages. "Robing" is the present participle and gerund of the verb "to robe," formed by adding "-ing" to it. The verb was made from the noun, so this whole family of words traces back to that Frankish word for loot.
