Etymology: "Ritornelle" is an alternative spelling of "ritornello," an Italian word whose core meaning is simply "little return." It is a diminutive of "ritorno," meaning "return," which itself comes from "ritornare," "to return." The diminutive ending turns the plain idea of coming back into a small, self-contained thing that comes back: in music, a passage that keeps reappearing. The French form "ritournelle" follows the same path, and it is the cousin English speakers most often meet, since the two languages borrowed the musical sense at about the same time from the Italian. The spelling with the final "e" is a variant that keeps the French-looking ending, so the same word can appear in either form in English writing about music.
