Etymology: "Rising" is simply "rise" with the suffix "-ing" added, and the suffix does two jobs here: it turns the verb into an adjective (a rising tide, a rising star) and into a noun (the rising of the sun, a rising in a revolt). "Rise" itself goes back to Old English "rīsan", which meant to get up from a lying or sitting position, so the physical act of standing up is the root of every later sense. The adjective's figurative uses grew out of that same physical image. A person "rising" in rank is imagined climbing upward, and a number "rising" is imagined as going up a scale. The two senses of the adjective, literal height and growth in amount or degree, both come from this upward movement, which is why one word covers a climbing career and a climbing temperature.
