Etymology: Latin speakers formed "riparius" from "ripa", meaning the bank of a river or stream, by adding the adjective suffix "-arius". That suffix marks something as belonging to or relating to a thing, so "riparius" simply meant "of the bank." The same pattern produced "agrarius", "of the field", from "ager", which gave English "agrarian." English took the Latin adjective more or less unchanged, adapting it as "riparian." The English form keeps the original sense of the land along a watercourse, and it is used in law and ecology, for instance, for rights to water and for plant communities that grow along streams and rivers.
