Etymology: "Ringbolts" is the plural of "ringbolt", a compound of two plain English words: "ring", a circular band, and "bolt", a metal bar or pin. A ringbolt is a bolt with a ring attached through an eye or loop at one end, so that a rope, chain or hook can be fastened to it. Ships, quaysides and building walls use them as fixed anchor points. The second half of the compound carries the core idea. "Bolt" in this sense describes a sturdy fastening rod, and the ring turns that rod into a handle or tie-point. The result is a fitting whose name simply lists its two parts, which is typical of technical compounds built from everyday vocabulary.
