Rhombe

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. An equilateral figure with four equal sides and no right angles, also known as a diamond shape
  2. A type of parallelogram where opposite angles are equal and adjacent angles are supplementary
  3. A geometric shape characterized by its symmetrical properties and unique angles that distinguish it from other quadrilaterals

Etymology: In ancient Greek, "rhombos" was something that spins, most often a spinning top, and the verb "rhembein" meant to turn round or whirl. The shape got its name from that image: a figure with four equal sides and its corners tipped over, like the outline of a top seen from above. Greek mathematicians applied the word to this geometric figure, and Latin took it over as "rhombus." English borrowed the learned form, and "rhombe" is a less common variant spelling of the same term. Because the name describes a turning motion, the figure is named for how it looks rather than for any measurement it has.
