Etymology: "Revelating" is the present participle of "revelate", a verb that English took from Latin "revēlātus", the past participle of "revēlāre", meaning "to unveil" or "to reveal". The Latin root combines "re-", "back" or "again", with "velum", a veil or covering, so the underlying image is of pulling a cloth away from something hidden. English "revelate" is not a straightforward borrowing of the Latin verb. Its existence can be explained as a back-formation, meaning it was produced by stripping an ending from an existing English word. Nouns and adjectives such as "revelation", "revelator" and "revelatory" were already in use, and speakers appear to have worked backward from them to create a verb. Its participle, "revelating", therefore arrived as a product of that backward reasoning rather than through an older tradition of use.
