Etymology: "Revarnished" is the past tense and past participle of "revarnish," so its history is that of the verb it inflects. That verb is simply the prefix "re-", meaning again, attached to "varnish." "Varnish" itself entered English from Old French "vernis," which in turn came from medieval Latin "veronix," a resin used to coat surfaces. The prefix, by contrast, is an English-side addition that lets speakers say a finish has been done once more. The result is a plain compound with a plain meaning: to coat something with varnish a second time, usually to renew an old, dulled finish on wood, furniture, or paintings.
