Etymology: "Reunify" is a plain compound: the prefix "re-", meaning "again" or "back", attached to "unify," which means "to make into one." Together they describe making separate parts into a single whole once more, as with a country or a divided city. The prefix has a longer ancestry than the verb itself. It traces back through Latin "re-" to an earlier Italic root, and it came into English by way of Old French, where it was already the standard way of marking repetition or return. English speakers borrowed the prefix so readily that they could attach it to almost any verb of Latin origin, and "unify" is one of the many such bases to which it was joined.
