Etymology: "Retyping" is the present participle and gerund of "retype", which is simply "re-" attached to "type". The prefix "re-" comes from Latin, where it meant "back" or "again", and it passed into English through Old French and Middle English. The verb "type" is the older and more interesting half of the pair: it reaches English from Latin and Greek roots tied to striking or impressing a mark, so a type was originally the impression a stamp leaves behind. Because "retype" just means to type something again, no special coinage or famous first use stands behind it. Its meaning follows directly from its two parts: to strike the keys once more, reproducing or correcting text that already exists.
