Retype
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- Entering text on a keyboard a second time, usually to correct or replace what was written before
- Typing out a document, message or passage again from the start or from a certain point onward
- To reproduce written material by keying it in once more, often after an earlier attempt went wrong
Etymology: "Retype" is about as transparent as English compounds get: the prefix "re-", meaning "again" or "back", attached to "type", which here means to write using a typewriter or keyboard. The verb "type" itself came from Latin "typus", a figure or image pressed into something, and it reached English by way of French, so retyping is literally pressing the same impression a second time. Because the two parts are so plain, there is little more to say about the history of the combination itself. The word is simply a verb formed in English from "re-" and "type", with no separate coinage or story behind it.
