Etymology: "Retreaded" is the past tense and past participle of "retread," a verb built from the prefix "re-" (again) and "tread," meaning to step on something or to wear grooves into a surface. The noun "tread" in the sense of the grooved pattern on a tyre's face is what gives the verb its tyre meaning: to put a fresh layer of tread onto a worn tyre so it can be used again. The verb then broadened beyond tyres. Once "retread" meant reinforcing a worn surface, it came to describe any repetition of an earlier effort, so a person who goes over the same ground, or a project that is redone, can be said to retread it. The sense of walking the same path a second time carries over naturally from the rubber to the idea.
