Etymology: "Retransmit" is a plain compound: the prefix "re-", meaning "again" or "back," attached to "transmit." The second half comes from Latin "transmittere," literally "to send across," built from "trans-" ("across") and "mittere" ("to send"). That same Latin verb gave English "transmit" and, through the same route, its many relatives such as "remit" and "submit." The Latin "re-" and "trans-" entered the word's history separately, so "retransmit" combines two prefixes with a single root. English formed it by adding "re-" to "transmit," which means the new word simply means sending across again.
