Etymology: "Resumptions" is simply the plural of "resumption", so the word's story is really the story of its root. "Resumption" is built from the Latin prefix "re-", meaning "again" or "back", and "sumptus", the past participle of "sumere", "to take". Put together, the original sense is close to "taking back up", which is exactly what the modern meaning of resuming an interrupted task still does. The Latin verb "sumere" is also the source of "consume", "assume" and "presume", all of which keep the idea of taking something in or up. The "-ion" ending turns the action into a noun, so a resumption is the act of taking something up again after it has been set down.
