Restamping
Part of speech: verb, noun
Definitions
- Pressing or imprinting a mark, pattern, or design onto a surface a second or subsequent time
- Applying a stamp or impression to something once more in order to refresh or renew the marking
- Repeating the action of stamping to create another impression or to replace a worn or faded mark
Etymology: "Restamping" is simply the present participle and gerund of "restamp," a verb formed by attaching the prefix "re-", meaning "again" or "anew," to "stamp." The base verb "stamp" comes from Old English and once referred to pounding or striking something, a sense that survives in the idea of pressing a mark onto a surface. Adding "re-" yields the sense of pressing that mark again, whether on a document, a piece of metal, or a fresh impression.
Synonyms: re-stamping
