Etymology: "Restaking" is the present participle and gerund of "restake", which is formed from the prefix "re-", meaning again, and "stake". The verb "stake" goes back to Old English "staca", a pointed stick or pole driven into the ground, and its later senses of wagering money and of risking something of value grew out of that physical object. Adding "re-" yields the idea of placing a stake again, whether that means driving a new post into the earth or putting money or property back on a bet or a venture. The noun form is a simple gerund built on this verb, so its meaning follows directly from the verb's two strands: the literal sense of setting stakes anew and the figurative sense of committing something of value again. Its everyday use in English is most common in financial and gaming contexts, where a participant commits assets once more to an existing position or wager.
