The Latin root combines "re-", meaning back or in return, with "spondeō", to pledge or promise, so an answer was originally a pledge given back in return. The same Latin verb gave French "répondre", which still means to answer today. The English word therefore reached us by a route through French, while the modern French form is a close relative that has stayed in everyday use.
