Etymology: "Respin" is about as transparent as English compounds get: the prefix "re-", meaning "again" or "once more," attached to "spin." The result is a word that means exactly what it says, to spin once more, whether that is a roulette wheel set turning again after a bad throw or a laundry cycle run a second time. The verb "spin" itself comes from Old English "spinnan," meaning to draw out and twist fibres into thread, which is why the older sense of spinning is tied to textiles long before it described a rotating motion. Attaching "re-" to it creates a word that inherits that rotational idea and adds only the notion of repetition. Because "re-" can be attached to almost any verb to signal a repeated action, "respin" belongs to a large family of such formations, and its meaning can be worked out from its parts without needing a special history.
